Sooooo many oranges!
Our organic vege box seems to have an excessive amount of oranges and tangelos at the moment. I know I could make a request to cut it back, but then I found a great way to use them up that fulfilled many purposes. I've randomly done this in the past, but I can see it will be a regular weekly activity from now on.
The kids don't really like eating oranges as they are (actually maybe it's because I don't enjoy preparing them for them to eat, so it's not something that's not been presented as an option??). They like them squeezed and I often squeeze them one orange each a day which they have with their lunch. Still too many oranges though.
They do like ice blocks though and as a way to avoid the suggestion of buying them an ice block while out, I've been making frozen ice cubes of the juice (mixed with 50% water) and serving them up to them which keeps them busy for 1/2 hr or so while they make their way through 3-4 ice cubes each.

Hi, I like to read your blog, thanks.
My Mother in-law made some nice orange slices in syrup which were really good.
The recipe was from Australian Women's Weekly book The Cook's Garden. It used 12 oranges (2.2kg) , 8 cups caster sugar (1.75kg), 2.5L water, and some orange liqueur (that I omitted when I made the recipe).
The fruit was prepared by boiling the whole oranges in salted water and rinsing in cold water, three times. I presume to remove bitterness. Then the fruit was cooled, sliced and simmered in the prepared syrup for 2 hours. It was spooned into sterilised jars and sealed and kept in the frig.
It really was delicious and there was plenty of useful syrup.
Happy blogging, Ann.
I freeze orange juice in baggies slipped inside a juice glass. That way, when I defrost a bag, it is the perfect-sized serving of "fresh" orange juice.
This trick came in really handy after the last bike race I volunteered for. I came home with tons of cut up oranges that had to be dealt with immediately.
